World War 2 Red Cross socks

"Knittin' for Britain," "A Bit for Belgium" and other relief projects were in full swing as soon as World War 2 started. Publicity photos showed First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and Hollywood stars with knitting in hand. When America entered the war, a writer commented, "The men have hardly time to grab their guns before their wives and sweethearts grab needles and yarn."
