World War 1 Red Cross socks

Socks for soldiers were not far behind. The Red Cross sent out a quarter of a million knitting pamphlets and by war's end had received 24 million military garments. A popular verse said, "Sweater, muffler, sock/For the soldier's wear!/List to pity's knock/For those 'over there.'"
