Striped stockings

Striped stockings are seen in paintings from as early as the 13th century. As knitted stockings became common in the Renaissance we see more and more of them, since horizontal stripes are quite easy to knit. These stockings use a shaped common heel, where a few decreases are made toward the end of the heel flap to make a more rounded corner.
